The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths on Wednesday raided several places in the state and seized cigarettes of foreign brands worth a whopping Rs 4-crore.
DRI officials declined to speak officially on the raids claiming that the investigation process was still going on till late at night.
Sources in the DRI however told The Goan that their team raided the residence of GST assistant commissioner Mahesh Desai at Kamat Kinara, Miramar as well as godowns at Dhargalim and the Dabolim airport where they made the seizures.
The raids began on Wednesday morning at around 9.30 am.
It may be recalled that in May last year, the DRI had seized 2,100 carton of foreign cigarettes from two Indonesian nationals worth over Rs 50 lakh.
The cigarettes were seized from two passengers whose baggage had arrived unaccompanied at the baggage centre at Sada Mormugao.
